Choosing the Perfect Winter Jacket

Author: Gracie   Date Posted:10 May 2023

Think of a good quality winter jacket as an investment. You want something durable, stylish and most importantly- warm. Here at Allingtons, we stock a crazy amount of options to choose from. But how do you know what type of jacket or coat will suit your needs? Well, don't worry - we are here to help!

A good winter jacket should have ultimate insulation, be reasonably lightweight and either be waterproof or at least water resistant. Here's a list of things to look out for when choosing your winter jacket.

Technical Jackets:

Are perfect for those with a sense of adventure, who need form and function over style.

  • If you’re using your jacket for sporting purposes, the main thing you need to consider is functionality and freedom of movement
  • Weigh up whether it is more important that the jacket is warm - or moveable.
  • Finding the sweet spot between warm and functional can be difficult but once you find it, hold onto that jacket forever!
  • Use these types of jackets if you are:
    • Skiing
    • Hiking
    • In very vulnerable freezing temperatures

Casual Jackets:

Have less of an emphasis on weight and functionality and focus more or warmth, weather protection and style

  • Typically heavier in weight, and potentially more restrictive to movement than a technical jacket
  • Often have hoods which may be faux fur lined, warm inner lining and a roomy fit.
  • Pockets are usually plentiful - hand warming pockets, front pockets, internal secure pockets for phones etc
  • Use these types of jackets if you are:
    • Commuting to and from work
    • Ice skating (casual)
    • Casual walking

Elements of a quality winter jacket:

  • Insulation:
    • Down and synthetic fibres such as fleece are common in quality jackets in order to ensure warmth and protection from the cold
    • Water resistant or waterproof
  • Hood:
    • Hoods are great for keeping your head and ears warm and dry in winter
    • A removable hood is handy if you want to change the look of your jacket, or to remove unnecessary weight if you don't think you'll need to use it in better weather
  • Closure systems:
    • The ability to close cuffs is a great feature, and some jackets have storm cuffs inside the outer shell to ensure optimum warmth
    • Zippers are a must have for any jacket, and the addition of a storm flap with stud closure is even better
    • Two-way zippers are great if you will be riding a horse or a bike
