Cotton drill and canvas take abrasion and hold a shape; linen and lyocell breathe far better and crease far more; corduroy and ponte sit in the middle and suit cooler months.
If you're buying for a specific occasion rather than for work, the drape matters as much as the cut - a wide leg in linen falls completely differently from the same shape in drill.
