Fabrics Worth Knowing Apart
Cotton drill is the traditional choice and still the toughest against abrasion. Stretch drill adds a little give, which changes how the pants feel over a day of squatting and climbing more than you would expect. Stretch canvas sits heavier again, and ripstop uses a reinforcing grid through the weave so a snag stays a snag instead of becoming a tear.
Lightweight nylon styles suit hot weather and light-duty days. Colours usually run black, navy and khaki,with the occasional stone or sand variant. Pocket design varies more than the fabric does. Bellows pockets expand outward and hold bulkier items, but they can catch on things; flat utility pockets sit closer to the leg.
Some styles have a dedicated zipped phone pocket to keep your phone secure when you're bending. Other styles carry a dedicated rule pocket, and a few have knee-pad inserts or pockets that will take knee pads, so it pays to check the description of the cargos you are considering to make sure they have the pockets that you need.
Waists, Cuffs and Fit
Elastic waistbands have become common and are worth trying if you find a fixed waistband too restrictive for bending or squatting across your work day. Cuffed legs taper at the hem to sit snuggly over your boots; straight legs sit more loosely at the ankle. Mid-rise, slim and regular fits are all represented, so there are options to suit every body type and work site.
