Why a Polo Over a Work Shirt
A cotton or micro-mesh knit moves air in a way woven drill never quite manages, which is the whole argument for a hi-vis polo. Through an Adelaide summer, supervising a yard or moving between site and ute all day, the difference by mid-afternoon is real.
The trade-off is a lighter fabric that won't take the same abrasion, so most people keep both in their rotation. Ritemate and JB’s make up the core of this range, with other brands offering lines that rotate throughout the year.
Knits, Cuts and Sleeve Lengths
Traditional pique polos make up the bulk, in both long and short sleeves. Two-tone micro-mesh styles make up the balance, sitting at the cooler end. Spliced and contrast styles put a darker panel across the shoulders and lower body for a more flattering silhouette.
Long sleeves are worth considering even in heat - it keeps the sun off your forearms if you’re working outdoors, and a light knit sleeve is cooler than most people expect.
Tape or No Tape
Around a third of this range carries reflective tape, and the rest is plain fluoro knit. That is a smaller proportion than the shirts, which reflects how polos tend to be worn. Yellow and orange with navy dominate, with lime as the third option.Knit polos wash and wear very differently to cotton drill. They dry much faster, which is great for a quick mid-week wash turnaround. Cold wash them and hang them to dry to keep the surface smooth and the colour bright. Fluoro dye in particular fades faster in a hot wash than any other colour in a workwear wardrobe.
