Professional Grade Stock Whips and Bullwhips for the Work Station

Mastering the art of stock handling requires tools that provide precision, balance, and a clear, consistent signal. We know how important quality whips are to help you manage livestock across vast distances. At Allingtons, we carry a premier selection of Australian-made stock whips and bullwhips, specifically chosen for their ability to perform in harsh outback conditions while maintaining the integrity of traditional plaiting techniques.

Handcrafted Kangaroo and Redhide Stock Whips

The stock whips in our collection are the gold standard for Australian ringers and drovers. Unlike other designs, a stock whip features a separate handle and thong, allowing for the maximum leverage and accuracy needed during a long day in the saddle.

We stock professional options from Nemeth Whips, ranging from durable 4-plait and 6-plait redhide for daily station work to the exceptional 12-plait Kangaroo hide models for superior flexibility and weight. These whips are engineered to develop a soft, responsive feel over time, ensuring that each flick provides the exact crack required for effective stock management.

Heavy-Duty Bullwhips and Specialised Training Tools

For those who prefer a more integrated design, our selection of bullwhips offers a weighted, continuous construction from handle to cracker. These tools are favoured for their power and ease of use in tighter spaces or for target work.

We also understand that the next generation of stockmen needs the right start, which is why we offer specialised children's redhide whips with youth-sized handles. These are crafted with the same attention to detail as our adult ranges, providing a balanced learning tool that helps juniors develop their technique safely and effectively.

Maintenance and Essential Spare Parts

Choosing to invest in professional whips means selecting a tool that can last a lifetime with the correct care. We provide essential ‘spare parts’ packs, including replacement falls and crackers, to make sure your whip never loses its signature sound.

Plus, because leather is a natural material, keeping it supple is vital to prevent cracking and fraying in the harsh Australian sun. By combining the expertise of master plaiters with the highest-grade hides, our collection offers the resilience and performance needed to handle livestock with confidence and skill.

Frequently asked questions

What is a stock whip and how is it used?

A stock whip is a traditional Australian whip with a rigid handle joined to a long flexible leather (or synthetic) thong by a connecting "keeper." It was developed for droving and mustering – used to make a loud crack that helps move and direct stock, without striking the animals. Today it's used for stock work, demonstrations and the popular sport of whip cracking.

What is the difference between a stock whip and a bullwhip?

The main difference is the handle. A stock whip has a separate rigid handle connected to the thong by a joint (the keeper), giving it a distinctive action, and is the traditional Australian style. A bullwhip has the handle and thong built as one continuous piece, with the handle running into the body of the whip – the style more associated with the Americas. Both crack, but they handle and balance differently.

What materials are Allingtons whips made from (kangaroo, redhide, nylon)?

Our whips are made from a range of materials. Kangaroo leather is the premium choice – strong, supple and finely plaited for the best action; redhide (greenhide/cowhide) is a tough, durable and more affordable traditional leather; and nylon/synthetic whips are weatherproof, low-maintenance and great value for learning and all-weather use. Check each product for the specific material and plait.

How do I choose the right length stock whip for my experience level?

Beginners are usually best starting with a shorter whip (around 4–5 feet), which is easier to control and crack while you learn the technique. As your skill grows, longer whips (6 feet and up) offer more reach and a louder crack but require more room and control. Choose a length that matches your experience and the space you'll use it in, and size up as you improve.

How do I care for and oil a leather stock whip?

Keep a leather whip supple and protected by applying a suitable leather dressing or whip conditioner periodically – work a small amount evenly into the plaited thong and let it absorb. Keep it dry and stored hung or loosely coiled (never tightly knotted), and dry it naturally if it gets wet, never near direct heat. Avoid over-oiling, which can make the leather too soft. Regular light conditioning keeps the whip cracking well and lasting for years.

Does Allingtons stock whips suitable for cracking competitions and demonstrations?

Yes – we stock quality whips suited to whip cracking, demonstrations and competition, including finely plaited kangaroo-leather whips built for crisp cracks and precise control, alongside tough redhide and weatherproof synthetic options. Check each product page for the specific material, length and plait to match your level and purpose.
