Your Guide to Quality Shaping Jeans
Shaping jeans built to hold their shape through the day, in the cuts that do the most work through the waist and seat. A firmer, higher-recovery denim that still looks the same at knock-off as it did at breakfast.
What the Shaping Actually Does
A shaping jean uses a denser, higher-recovery denim through the front panels and a contoured waistband to smooth the line and stop the jean sagging out over a day of wear. The point isn't compression - it's that the pair still looks the way it did at eight in the morning by the time you're heading home.
It's a tight, focused range. Levi's accounts for nearly all of it, across their shaping series, with one Wrangler riding style alongside.
Bootcut, Straight, Slim and Skinny
The shaping construction runs across four leg shapes, so you're not locked into one look. Bootcut opens from the knee and falls over a boot cleanly, which makes it the practical pick if you wear one. Straight holds an even line.
Slim and super skinny narrow through the calf and ankle, and suit tucking into a taller boot rather than wearing over it. High-rise cuts feature through the range, which is generally where shaping works best.
Washes
The colours here are darker and more even than a typical denim range, which suits what these jeans are for - deep indigos, dark tints, rinses and a couple of mid blues. A darker, less distressed wash carries the smooth line better than a heavily faded one.
Leg opening is worth a look before you order, particularly if you wear boots. The bootcut opens back out below the knee and falls over a shaft cleanly; the slim and super skinny cuts are made to go inside a boot rather than over it, and forcing the issue bunches the denim at the calf.
Making Them Last
High-recovery denim depends on its elastane, and heat is what kills it. A hot wash or a few passes through a tumble dryer and the fabric stops springing back, at which point the shaping stops working and the jeans start bagging like any other pair. Cold wash, inside out, and hang them to dry.
Wash them less often than you'd think, too. Denim rarely needs a cycle after every wear, and every wash costs a little of the recovery that makes these jeans worth buying. Airing them out between wears does most of the work.
Where They Sit in the Wardrobe
These are women's cuts throughout. If you want the same shaping effect in a more relaxed leg, the stretch jeans range includes slim and straight shaping styles, and the wider women's jeans range covers everything else.
Worth Getting the Size Right First Time
Shipping is free across Australia once you pass $175. Shaping denim should feel firm when you first pull it on and settle within an hour - if it feels tight rather than firm, go up rather than hoping it gives, because high-recovery fabric is designed specifically not to. The team can talk you through it, and the Parafield showroom has fitting rooms if you'd rather be certain. Related:
