A Deeper Range Than Most Expect
There are over one hundred and forty men's belts here, and they split into three broad groups: dress belts with a low-profile buckle, Western belts with visible tooling or stitching, and work belts built to carry weight. Width is the first thing to settle. Around 35mm (1 ⅜”) suits dress wear and most chinos; 38 to 40mm (1 ½”) is the everyday range that fits standard jeans loops; wider straps up to about 45mm (1 ¾) inch are Western and work territory.
Twin Keepers, Hobbles and Knife Belts
Twin keeper belts are the most common style here - two loops rather than one. Hobble belts, in single and double layers,are generally for station use and are built heavier, with several available with an integrated knife pouch.
Tooled Western belts carry pressed floral or geometric patterns, often with lacing, braiding, piercing, stud, concho or bling detail. Reversible belts give you black on one side and brown on the other, which is genuinely useful if you travel light.
Leather and Colour
A belt cut from a single piece of solid hide will outlast a bonded or layered one by years, because there's nothing to delaminate. Colours run black, chocolate, chestnut, tan, dark tan, camel, cognac and mocha, with a few two-tone and metallic-finished options.
Match the belt leather roughly to your boots rather than exactly - identical is harder to achieve and looks more forced than a sensible near-match. Looking after a leather belt takes about five minutes a year. Wipe the dust off, work a little conditioner into the strap, and let it dry away from heat.
Leather that never gets conditioned dries out and cracks at the fold where the buckle sits, which is where almost every belt eventually fails. Avoid rolling a belt tightly for storage as well - hanging it flat keeps the strap from taking a permanent curve.
