Reliable Hi Vis Shirts You Can Trust

Hi-vis shirts in the cuts that survive a summer on site, from open-front drill through to vented lightweights. Half button drill still outsells everything else, and there's a good reason for that!

Open-Front, Closed-Front and Vented

Half button long sleeve drill shirts are the ones most blokes reach for, even though they only make up about 25% of the range in the hi vis category. Their easy on/off design (with less buttons) and the safety factor of not having front shirt-tails to get caught in machinery have made them a tradie favourite for just about every work site you can imagine. Most shirts (long or short sleeve) offer UPF 50+ protection from the sun, but the long sleeve is still the most popular option. Open front shirts make up the rest of this category, and have more than earned their place.

When heavy cotton drill is too much, the vented lightweight shirts move a lot more air through the back and underarms. Ritemate carries the largest selection across both options, with FXD covering much of the rest.

Taped or Plain Fluoro

Close to half of these shirts carry reflective tape and the rest are plain fluoro. On shirts, the tape always runs across the chest and the upper back, around the sleeves in line with the chest tape, and around the waist, which is what makes the shirt visible from every direction. Vests (having no sleeves) usually have tape over the shoulders from the chest tape on the front, to the upper line of tape on the back. Check with your work site to find out whether they require taped or plain hi vis, and make your selection from there.

Sleeve length is the other choice. Long sleeves obviously offer more sun protection across a full day outdoors; short sleeves win if you don’t have to work in direct sun. Fit is worth a thought too. A work shirt cut close looks tidier but can restrict your movement.

Check the size guide on the individual product pages, and size up rather than down if you’re in between. A bit of extra room for movement beats being restricted every time.

Colours Beyond Orange and Yellow

Yellow and orange with navy remain the core, but this range runs wider than that - pink, blue and emerald contrast panels also appear. The darker contrast panel below the waist and lower sleeves is not just styling; it hides a good deal of the day's grime between washes.

Same Shirt, Cut for Everyone

The women's hi-vis range carries these same open-front and vented styles, and there are taped shirts in kids' hi-vis for the young ones around the yard.

Stock Up Before Summer Bites

The showroom at Parafield has the fabrics on the rack if you want to feel the difference between heavy drill, light drill and vented before committing. Once you establish your size within a brand, you will usually find you can select that size in most garments in their range and be confident that they will fit.

Frequently asked questions

Are these hi vis shirts compliant with AS/NZS 4602.1, and do they offer UPF sun protection?

Most styles in this range are. Our Ritemate hi vis shirts are made to AS/NZS 4602.1:2011, either for day wear (untaped styles of class D) or day/night wear (taped orange and yellow styles of class D/N). The taped blue, pink and emerald Ritemate shirts are rated for night wear only (class N). The FXD LSH-4T Vented Tech Hi-Vis Shirt is listed as Class D/N. A few listings, including the children's shirts, don't quote the standard, so check the label. For sun protection, the Ritemate and FXD shirts are rated UPF 50+. Always confirm both ratings against your worksite's requirements.

What is the difference between Day, Night, and Day/Night hi vis shirts?

Day shirts, like the Ritemate Open Front L/S Shirt (RM1050), use fluorescent fabric for daylight visibility. Night shirts rely on reflective tape that bounces light back to headlights, and Day/Night shirts, such as the taped Ritemate RM1050R in orange, combine both. Colour matters: only fluorescent yellow, orange and orange-red meet Australian daytime requirements. That's why the pink, blue and emerald versions of the RM1050R are rated for night wear only, and those colours are generally not accepted on worksites. Check with your supervisor, and read our hi vis buying guide.

Do hi vis work shirts run true to size, and are they available in long and short sleeve?

Yes, you'll find both. Ritemate makes long and short sleeve versions of its open front, closed front and vented hi vis shirts, and its cotton twill is double pre-shrunk to help the fit hold after washing. Adult Ritemate sizes run from XS (XXS in some styles) up to 5XL or 6XL, with women's sizes 6 to 20 in the vented closed front shirt and kids hi vis from size 0 to 14. Fit varies a little between cuts, so compare your chest measurement with our shirt sizing guide. Women can also browse our womens hi vis range.

Do cotton hi vis shirts meet Australian standards?

Yes, they can. Compliance comes down to the fabric's tested colour and brightness, the garment design and, for night use, the tape, rather than the fibre itself. Most of our Ritemate hi vis shirts are 100% mercerised cotton twill and are made to AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 for day or day/night wear. The FXD LSH-4T is 97% cotton ripstop and listed as Class D/N. Cotton is cool and breathable in the heat, but like any hi vis it fades with washing and sun, so replace it once the colour dulls. Check each label against your site's requirements.

How long does the reflective tape last with washing?

There's no fixed number of washes. Tape life depends on the tape itself, how you wash and dry the shirt, and wear from sun and abrasion. Check the care label for manufacturer guidance and inspect the tape regularly. Replace a shirt when the tape is cracked, peeling or no longer bright under a torch, or when the fluoro fabric fades, because faded hi vis isn't effective. Regularly worn hi vis often needs replacing around every 6 months. The Ritemate Closed Front Work Shirt with Reflective Tape is a solid day/night replacement.

How do I wash a hi vis shirt to keep it bright and compliant?

Follow the care label first. For cotton twill hi vis, do up the buttons, turn the shirt inside out and wash it cold on a gentle cycle with similar colours. Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach and fabric softener, which can dull fluoro colour and leave residue on the tape. Line dry in the shade, since sun exposure fades hi vis, and skip the dryer. If you iron, keep the iron off the tape. Once the colour fades, replace the shirt, as faded hi vis won't keep you safe on site. When it's time, you'll find replacements in our hi vis workwear range.
