The Crowning Glory of Country Style

A good hat is the first thing people notice and the last thing you take off at the end of the day. At Allingtons, we understand the bond between a person and their hat. We have spent decades curating a collection of country hats and hat brands that stand up to the demands of rural life, stocking iconic hat styles that look better with every speck of dust and sun-fade they collect.

Wide-Brim Hats

When the sun is beating down on the paddock, there is no substitute for coverage. Our wide-brim hats are the ultimate defence against the Australian climate. Crafted from high-quality fur felts and durable wools, these hats offer a generous brim that shades your face, ears, and neck from UV rays.

They are the constant companion of farmers, stockmen, and anyone who spends their days in the open air. Beyond their practicality, they carry a timeless elegance, effortlessly transitioning from a dusty day on the tractor to looking sharp at a country wedding.

Western

For those who carry the spirit of the rodeo in their heart, our western range delivers authentic style. These cowboy hats feature the classic high crowns and shaped brims that have defined the genre for a century.

You will find stiff felts that hold their shape in the chute, and softer, crushable styles that bounce back after being tossed in the back of the ute. With intricate hat bands, cattleman creases, and a variety of colours from silverbelly to jet black, our western hats let you express your personality while paying homage to the traditions of the West.

Country

The quintessential Australian country hat is understated, rugged, and built for work. This collection of country hats focuses on functionality and longevity. We stock iconic Akubra hats and other trusted heritage brands that have become synonymous with the outback.

Our hats are designed to handle the rough and tumble of daily wear, featuring comfortable leather sweatbands and water-resistant finishes. They are the kind of hats that become like an old friend, moulding to the shape of your head over years of loyal service until they feel like they were made just for you.

Straw Hats

Summer in Australia calls for headwear that breathes. Our straw and palm leaf hats are lightweight, airy, and incredibly tough. Perfect for long days in the saddle or working the yards in January, they allow heat to escape while still providing a solid brim for shade.

From tightly woven Bangora styles that look sharp at a campdraft to rough-and-ready work hats that can take a beating, our straw collection is essential for beating the heat without losing your country edge.

Caps

Sometimes you just need to grab something quick and go. Our range of caps covers everything from classic truckers with mesh backs for ventilation to durable cotton drill caps that keep the sun out of your eyes.

They are perfect for those casual days, early morning milk runs, or keeping the hair out of your face while you fix a fence. With logos from your favourite country brands and machinery makers, they are a staple of the casual country wardrobe.

Beanies

When the frost settles on the grass and the wind picks up, a good beanie is worth its weight in gold. Our collection of beanies includes soft, insulating knits that trap body heat to keep you warm on those freezing winter mornings. They fit easily under a hood or in a pocket, ready to be deployed when the temperature drops. Simple, effective, and cosy, they are a winter essential for every member of the family.

Childrens Hats

Don’t think we forgot about the kids! We believe in starting them young. Our children's hat range offers the same quality and protection as our adult hats, just scaled down for little heads. You will find pint-sized cowboy hats for the budding ringer, cute straw hats for days at the beach, and colourful caps that they will love to wear. Protecting their skin from the sun is a priority, and our kids' hats make sure they look the part while staying safe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my head for a hat?

Use a soft measuring tape and wrap it around your head about 1cm above your ears and eyebrows - this is the widest part of your head where a hat would sit. Keep the tape level all the way around. Note the measurement in centimetres and compare with the brand's sizing chart. If you're between sizes, and the hat has a leather sweatband (like most felt hats), select the next size up - leather sweatbands shrink to conform to your head over time. If the hat has a fabric or buckram band, choose the size that feels comfortable, as it won't change.

What hat styles are best for sun protection?

Wide-brim hats offer the best sun protection, shielding your face, ears, neck, and shoulders from harmful UV rays. Look for hats with a brim width of at least 7.5cm (3 inches) for effective coverage. Felt hats from brands like Akubra and Thomas Cook, as well as straw and cotton hats from Avenel, all provide excellent sun protection. Caps protect the forehead and eyes but leave the ears, neck, and face exposed.

How do I choose between a wide brim and a standard brim hat?

A wide brim (typically 8cm or more) provides maximum sun and rain protection and is ideal for outdoor work, farming, and riding. A standard brim (around 6–7cm) offers a more versatile, everyday look that works well in both rural and urban settings. Consider how much time you spend outdoors and what activities you'll be doing - the more exposure, the wider the brim.

How do I care for and store a felt hat?

Brush your felt hat regularly with a soft hat brush to remove dust and dirt - always brush in the direction of the nap. Store it on a hat rack, in a hat box, or upside down on its crown on a flat surface to protect the brim shape. Avoid storing it in hot, humid places. Never leave a felt hat sitting on its brim, as this will cause it to flatten over time.

What should I do if my hat gets wet?

If your felt hat gets wet, shake off excess water and let it dry naturally at room temperature on a flat surface or a hat stand. Never use a hairdryer, heater, or direct sunlight to speed up the drying process, as heat can shrink and warp the hat. Once dry, brush it gently with a hat brush to restore the nap. Quality felt hats (especially Akubra, made from rabbit fur felt) are naturally water-resistant and will recover well from getting wet.
