A modern waterproof jacket uses a synthetic membrane or coating for fully sealed, maintenance-free waterproofing, often lighter and more packable. Oilskins offer heritage durability and breathability; modern waterproofs offer lighter, fuss-free protection.

For cold and wet, look for genuine weather protection (an oilskin or a waterproof/water-resistant outer) combined with warmth (insulation, fleece lining or a layer underneath). For driving rain choose a waterproof outer with a hood or collar; for dry cold, focus on insulation. Allowing room to layer underneath is the key to staying warm and dry.

Clean an oilskin by wiping it down with cold water and a sponge – never machine wash, dry clean or use hot water or detergent, as these strip the wax. When it starts to lose its water resistance, re-proof it by warming the jacket and the proofing wax/dressing slightly and rubbing the wax evenly into the fabric (paying attention to seams and creases), then leave it to dry and absorb. Re-proofing once a year or as needed keeps an oilskin weatherproof for decades.
