The Johnny Crushable takes a traditional safari shape and gives it a practical twist. It’s made from 100% Australian wool felt, giving it solid structure while keeping it soft enough to pack or roll without ruining the shape.
Each hat starts with premium wool fibres that are felted - pressed together with moisture and heat - to form a dense, durable fabric. The felt is then steamed and moulded on a hat block to form the crown and brim. The excess felt is trimmed off, the edge stitched, and the hatband added.
The result is a hat that’s packable and bounces back after being crushed or stored in a bag - ideal for those who are always on the move.

How do I work out what size I need for the Avenel Johnny Hat?
To start with, establish the size you need as per your head measurement. Measure the circumference around your head - approximately 12mm (1/2") above your ears. Keep the dressmaker tape level and firm, and keep it across the temple and above the eyebrow ridges. For in-between measurements, select the next size up.
Can I wear it in the rain?
Yes the wool felt is naturally water repellent, and will tolerate a light shower. When it does get wet, let it air dry naturally. Avoid accelerating the drying process by using heat or direct sunlight, as this can cause the natural felt fibre to shrink and distort the shape of the hat.
How do I care for my Johnny hat?
Use a soft bristle brush to gently brush away dust. Light marks can be wiped off with a damp cloth. To maintain its shape long-term, store it on a hat stand, on a shelf upside down (on it's crown), or in a hat box. Handle it by the brim rather than the crown to help keep its shape. You can also pack Johnny, and he will pop back into shape when you unpack him. (Just don't store him crushed for long periods of time!)
